Media coverage of the area known as Rojava has been broadly favourable. The main Syrian Kurdish militia, the People’s Protection Units or YPG has attracted sympathy for its battle against the Islamic State. But foreign journalists usually do not spend more than a week or two in the region. And the steady blast of pro-YPG propaganda dressed up as news can blur the picture.
